Your Vision and "Future Memories"

Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler

Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler

Vision is by far the most powerful and important of our physical senses. It allows us to "image" the world around us - and to "make sense" of our immediate environment.

Actually, your vision is one of the most sensitive and complicated of all of your physical senses. And a surprising 25% of your brain is actively involved in the complex process of seeing, and then interpreting what you've seen.

In many ways, your eyes can be considered a direct extension of your brain.

Each of your eyes has 125,000,000 visual receptors. These receptors are actually specialized neurons (you recall that "neurons" are the basic cells of the brain).

And you likely also remember from your studies of biology in school that these specialized neurons in your eyes are called "rods" and "cones."

But you may not realize what vision really is!

You may be quite surprised to learn that what your eyes actually "see" is light being reflected off the surface of something. That's it - what you actually see is only reflected light! You do NOT "see"objects!

The special neurons in your eyes (the rods and cones) then convert this reflected light into electrical signals.

These tiny electrical signals are then sent into your brain via your optic nerve.

Next -- your brain analyzes these tiny electrical signals, and uses them to create a mental "picture" of what you have "seen."

So - when you say you "see" something - what you really "see" is only a "mental picture" that was assembled in your own brain!

This brings us to "visualization" -- the process of using your imagination (instead of your eyes) to create a mental image.

Mental imagery, often called "visualization," has long been recommended as a powerful method of achieving goals.

If we believe the reports of world class athletes and other superachievers, there's no doubt that pre-performance visualization works.

But let's put it to a scientific test: Recent PET (positron-emission tomography) scans of human brains have provided absolutely positive proof that mental visualization of a complex movement (such as that involved in a sport) can help improve actual performance.

And there's also evidence that such improvements are not limited to sports activities. Research has also clearly shown "visualization improvements" to such intellectual activities such as delivering a speech, playing music, acting, etc.

The PET scans have clearly established that merely thinking about something DOES bring about actual physical changes in your brain!

Think about that for a moment.

Such mental imaging is actually "seeing" into the future!

But this time, instead of your brain interpreting light reflecting off an object - you're seeing a "future memory" of yourself performing some action, or achieving some goal or state of being.

Remarkable thought, isn't it?

And as you build such future memories by replaying them in your mind, the physical neural networks that hold these "memories" will continue to grow stronger and more stable.

Does it matter that what you are visualizing or mentally picturing as a "future memory" isn't "real" yet?

Not at all. Your subconscious mind cannot tell the difference between something you "see," and something you mentally picture as a "future memory."

And the more detailed your images of your "future memories," the more robust will be the physical neural networks holding those memories.

What does this mean in terms of expanding your natural genius?

Assuming you have a clear picture of your goal, your next logical step is to begin to create some detailed "future memories" of how it looks to have already achieved your goal.

Such a "seeing" process requires that you clearly fill in the details of how it will be to have achieved that goal. The more detailed your goal, the better you will be able to "see" and achieve it.

If you want to build a new house, for example, begin to ask yourself what kind of house. What style is the exterior? Is it built of wood, bricks, or? How the rooms flow from one to the other? Does the kitchen get morning light? In short, begin to build it in your "mind's eye."

Just as world-level athletes create entirely new levels of performance, you can create whatever reality YOU desire. Science is solidly behind you!
