Tap Into Your Natural Genius - Part 2

Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler

Dr. Jill Ammon-Wexler

Back in the 1940's, scientists claimed the average person used about 40% of their potential brainpower. As we've learned more and more about the human brain, that estimate has dropped lower and lower.

About 10 years ago it was believed we use perhaps ten percent of our potential brainpower.

But by applying modern technology to study the brain - neuroscientists now estimate that most of us use less than 1% of our potential brain power.

Since you have an interest in brain function (why else would you be reading this), it's fair to assume you're in possession of above-average intelligence.

But -- imagine if you could increase the utilization of your brain to 2%. You would undergo a virtual *quantum-leap* in your practical, real-life applied intelligence.

We're talking about the ability to truly tap into your natural genius.

And speaking of genius, there's a point we need to consider: It used to be that the term "genius" referred only to a person with a very high score on an "IQ test."

But that is no longer true...because of the appearance of "humanistic" psychology in the 1960's.

Humanistic psychology placed a new emphasis on the "whole" person. As a result, it became obvious that there are *many* different types of "genius."

There's pure intellectual genius, there's artistic genius, the movement genius of an athlete or dancer, musical genius, relationship-building genius, leader- ship genius, entrepreneurial genius. The list goes on and on.

But still - all of these varied definitions of genius do share one basic assumption: It all starts in the mind. And the mind, in turn, depends upon healthy brain function and "smart" utilization!

So there you have it! Let's go back to our issue of how to boost your brain power from 1% -- to perhaps 2% or more.

To do that, let's get down to basics. It's easy to forget that your brain is a physical organ. And it has certain physical requirements that must be met, if it is to function well.

Your 3-pound brain uses as much as 25% of the water you consume. And dehydration can actually decrease your measurable intelligence as much as 50%. You need to provide your brain (and your body) with a steady supply of good, clean water.

Many of today's more forward-looking school systems are allowing their students to keep a personal supply of water at their desks!

Then there's food. Your brain has a great need for fuel, just like your muscles and your bones.

The brain's most basic food is glucose. If you eat a well-rounded diet (not fast-food), chances are you're providing your brain with a good supply of its basic fuel.

But if you suffer from "chronic stress," most of that fuel is going elsewhere.

The stress response releases a natural biochemical called *cortisol.* That cortisol grabs your brain's glucose -- and uses it to adapt your body to whatever is causing your stress (it physically prepares your body to either "fight or run.")

That's why it's so hard to "think" when you're stressed. (Ever run in circles trying to find your car keys when you're in a big hurry?)

And that's also why chronic stress leads to the very real sensation of *brain exhaustion.*

If your brain doesn't get the food it needs, it can't operate efficiently. Not only will you not be as "smart" as you should be -- your memory and judgment will also suffer. The results can vary from mildly irritating to truly disasterous.

A few years back, a very bright man came to my office with a serious stress-related problem. We'll call him James.

As the president of a good-sized corporation, James had to make critically important decisions based on written reports. But he was so chronically stressed, he was having trouble understanding what he was reading.

Stress can seriously reduce your *practical* brainpower

This is an avoidable problem! Since you have an obvious interest in developing your true natural genius, a good place to start is by paying serious attention to the basic physical needs of your brain -- stress included!

Consider the following:
=> Consumption of adequate water (coffee, tea and soda really do not count).
=> Stress management (find some way to take control any "long-term uninterrupted* stress - take a break and let your body do some recovery work).
=> Brain supplementation (there are many valuable brain supplements available today. You might want to add one to your daily diet for a mental boost (and faster recovery from mental and physical stress)
.
